Here are a few tips which can help you make the most out of your loft conversion.

Head Height and Staircase Access For a Loft Conversion

Generally speaking, if you have at least 230 centimeters from the floor to the roof at its peak, you have ample head height for a loft conversion. To ensure that your new living space is comfortable to move around in, at least half of your loft space should be this tall.

Per building regulations in the UK, if you plan to turn your loft into a bedroom, bathroom, home office or playroom, you must have a permanent staircase in place. This does not mean that you need to build a wide staircase like the one on your lower level as spiral staircases are allowed as are the most minimal staircase configurations. When looking at the pros and cons of a loft conversion, consider how much space you will lose on the floor beneath the conversion to accommodate the new staircase, paying particular attention to  the amount of head height which is available.

Planning Permission

The loft conversions built by Access Builders take on average, 6 to 8 weeks to complete.  Whether or not you are required to obtain planning permission is dependent upon what your specific plans are. However, many loft conversions can be started using “permitted development” before the plans are actually passed. We will assist you with every aspect of the planning application so that you do not have to undergo this often confusing process yourself.

Choosing the Right Windows

Choosing the right types of windows for your loft conversion is important as having natural daylight stream into your living space will add to your enjoyment. There are several window options from which to choose. Among the most popular and cost-effective types of windows for loft conversions are skylights or roof lights. These windows are easy to install and they allow natural sunlight to illuminate your converted space.

Many people choose to install dormer windows as these types of windows offer some extra headroom in addition to light. Dormer windows do alter the exterior appearance of a house which means they often require planning permission.

Safety Considerations

It is important to incorporate fire regulations into your early loft conversion plans. The building materials used for your conversion must be in compliance with fire resistance standards. It is required that you install a smoke detector near your new upstairs space. A sprinkler system is required if the floor is higher than 7.5 metres above the ground. In a 2-story house, inside doors around the staircase must be replaced with fire doors to provide people with a protective path from the loft down to the first floor exit. You can choose to have your original doors upgraded to fire doors as many companies provide this service. If your new conversion will consist of several rooms, you must have an emergency exit going out to the roof. Most home owners needing this exit opt for an attractive fire escape window that is large enough to climb through.
